Aston Villa trio go public with their fury after unexpected deal agreed with rivals

Aston Villa trio took unusual steps to go public with their fury over the Jacob Ramsey deal because the club and Newcastle United are two “big victims” of the profit and sustainability rules (PSR).

Villa and Newcastle have both been forced to sell players to avoid being hit with PSR breaches over the past couple of seasons.

Under the PSR rules, top-flight clubs are only permitted to lose £105million over a rolling three-year period.

Villa have just sold academy product Ramsey to Newcastle in a £40million deal as they look to improve their financial situation.

It comes after the West Midlands giants completed the last-ditch sale of their women’s team earlier this summer, helping them raise funds before their accounting deadline on 30 June.

Aston Villa stars send cryptic messages after Jacob Ramsey exit

This article contains exclusive comment from Keith Wyness, former Everton, Aston Villa and Aberdeen CEO.

Ramsey’s exit has not been well taken by the Villa supporters, while senior player Tyrone Mings insisted the fans “don’t know the half of it” after sharing a cryptic message on social media.

Meanwhile, club captain John McGinn also sent an emotion farewell message to Ramsey, adding “it seems to be the way football is set up these days”.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness said: “I didn’t read into it that much.

“I did feel it was more about Jacob as a person. I’ve heard everybody speak about him so highly.

“Tommy Jordan, who’s the press guy that worked for me at Villa as well and is still there, came out with something that I don’t see Tommy normally do.

“He was very effusive in his praise about Jacob as a person. How polite, how energetic he was, how decent and what a pleasure he was to work with.

“I think it’s more about that than actually having a pop at the hierarchy. I think McGinn and Tyrone are both very seasoned professionals and really good guys.

“I think they just felt that they needed to mark the respect that they had for him and say good luck. But I didn’t read it as though it was having a pop at the management.

“I think those players understand as much as anybody the unfortunate PSR sets of rules that we’ve got in this game right now.

“I mean, Newcastle and Villa have been two big victims of PSR and to me it’s just not right.

“Somehow, it’s got to be improved in some way.”
