Guillaume Restes: The year Aston Villa target won silverware with Thierry Henry
Aston Villa could soon be adding a medal winner to the squad as interest ramps up in Toulouse goalkeeper Guillaume Restes.
The 21-year-old is being seriously considered as Emi Martinez's replacement, with the Argentine expected to depart Villa Park this summer.
Villa have already opened talks for the shot-stopper's signature, with £20million believed to be enough to complete a deal with the Ligue 1 side.
Last season, Restes kept nine clean sheets in 34 matches as Toulouse finished mid-table, seeing out another impressive person campaign in France.
It looks as though his performances have been enough to earn him a move to the Premier League, and he will have already had the stamp of approval from one of the division's biggest legends.
If Thierry Henry is a fan of the player, and he undoubtedly will be, then Unai Emery has every reason to give the youngster an opportunity at Villa Park.
Guillaume Restes wins Olympic silver in 2024
Back in 2024, Restes was called up to France's Olympic squad, alongside the likes of Rayan Cherki, Desire Doue and Michael Olise.
The squad was coached by none other than Arsenal and France legend Henry, with the team reaching the final before losing 5-3 to Spain.
While the team came up just short of the gold medal, Restes earned himself a silver medal, a moment that put him on the metaphorical map.
The goalkeeper, of course, will be hoping that he can add to his trophy cabinet in the years to come, and the Villans certainly have a very good chance of reaching some finals.
Emery lifting the Europa League trophy for the fifth time might be exactly what Restes needs to persuade him into moving to England this summer.
What's the latest on Emi Martinez's future?
Multiple clubs, such as Manchester United, Inter Milan, and, more recently, Juventus, have been strongly linked with a move for the veteran shot-stopper.
It is entirely possible, however, that Martinez could end up staying at Villa Park if a deal cannot be reached, which would throw a spanner in the works.
At 33 years of age, Villa will soon need to think about his potential successor, especially as an increasing number of fans take issue with some of his displays.
If the Villans are to sign Restes, though, they would be wise to strike a deal very soon, rather than allowing another European giant to steal his signature.
