Aurelien Tchouameni is 'priority' signing for Liverpool after source's update - pundit

Alex McLeish has suggested Monaco midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni is a “priority” signing for Liverpool this summer.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Scotland manager tipped the Reds to work hard on striking a deal for the 22-year-old behind closed doors.

A recruitment source told Football Insider on Thursday (12 May) that Monaco are putting together a list of targets to replace Tchouameni as they prepare to cash in this summer.

That could then open the door for Liverpool to strike a deal.

Manchester City and Chelsea have also registered their interest in poaching the France international this summer.

However, Monaco are set to hold out for a £50million-plus fee, with Tchouameni contracted until 2024.

With the likes of James Milner, Jordan Henderson and Thiago Alcantara in their 30s, McLeish suggested a new midfielder would be top of Jurgen Klopp’s shopping list.

“I think they’ll have already have identified him as a priority,” McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge.

“Knowing Liverpool, knowing the way that Klopp works, he’s a consummate professional.

“They will have their little black book full of players from every position from all over the world.

“We’ll see Liverpool making business when they want to make business. It won’t be on the back pages of the sports papers.”

Tchouameni has played 93 times for Monaco to date, having joined from Bordeaux in 2020.

He also has eight France caps under his belt.

As well as Henderson, Milner and Thiago, Klopp also has Fabinho, Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Curtis Jones to call on in central midfield.
