Barry Ferguson: It would be a mistake if Caixinha does this at Rangers
By Harvey Byrne
Former midfielder Barry Ferguson has told that he feels it will be a mistake if Pedro Caixinha strips Lee Wallace of the Rangers captaincy and hands it to new singing Bruno Alves.
The Gers have brought in as many as nine new players this summer following a disappointing third placed finish.
Of those includes centre-back veteran Alves and many believe that he can bring some much needed leadership to the side and should become the club’s captain.
However, Ferguson, who sent 11 years at Ibrox across two spells believes Caixinha would be making a mistake if he relieves Wallace of the captains duty.
“I also hear Lee Wallace is in danger of losing the captaincy to Alves but in my opinion that would be a mistake,” wrote Wallace in his column for the Daily Record.
“Lee is a player I rate very highly. He had a poor game against Progres and has taken some stick in the Press and from fans but I don’t see the need for change.
“He’s not loud or aggressive in his nature on the pitch but he has real strengths and if the armband is to be handed over then it needs to go to someone who knows the club.
“They only other candidate is Kenny Miller. I know about the clamour for Alves to get it but I just can’t agree. I know he has been a fantastic player but a change of captaincy isn’t required.”
Alves, 35, has had a very colourful career, which has seen him star at such clubs as Zenit Saint Petersburg, Porto and Fenerbache.
He was also part of the Portugal team that lifted the European Championships last summer and he is still a part of their team.
Wallace, meanwhile took the captaincy at Rangers in the summer of 2015 after the sale of Lee McCulloch and has been at the club for six years.
The left-back played in 35 matches in all competitions for Rangers last season, but he was among many who supporters thought had failed to impress.
