Barry Ferguson: O’Rourke reveals only way Rangers interim could land permanent deal

Barry Ferguson could be given the permanent Rangers job if he oversees a strong end to the season, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that the boss is already well-backed by the Ibrox crowd thanks to his previous spell as Rangers’ club captain.

The appointments of Neil McCann, Alan McGregor and Billy Dodds to his coaching and support staff have also inspired praise from the crowd.

This comes after Clement failed to win over the supporters during his time at Ibrox, as Rangers fans called for Clement’s sacking for months before his eventual dismissal.

Meanwhile, getting a result in the next Old Firm clash with Celtic would add further backing, as O’Rourke explained it would “go a long way” towards him landing the job.

However, Rangers and prospective new owners 49ers Enterprises are keen to take their time over the appointment to ensure they get the right man.

Barry Ferguson could earn permanent Rangers job in shock twist

Ferguson enjoyed a winning start to his Rangers managerial career with a 4-2 win against Kilmarnock on 26 February thanks to goals form Vaclav Cerny, Cyriel Dessers and Nedim Bajrami.

The potential return of Steven Gerrard is the “dream” appointment for Rangers as things stand, and Ferguson is not currently considered a leading contender.

However, a strong end to the season both domestically and in the Europa League would do no harm to his chances – particularly if he can win the Europa League.

The club are considering a number of options for the position, and 49ers Enterprises will play a big role in deciding Rangers’ next manager after behind-the-scenes talks.

The prospective new owners are set to have a big say in the final decision as they want their own man in charge ahead of a potential takeover at Ibrox.

Steven Gerrard leading managerial contenders at Ibrox

Football Insider revealed on 24 February that 49ers Enterprises’ “dream” target Gerrard would be open to returning to Rangers and remains well-connected at the club.

His departure from Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Ettifaq in January means he is currently out of work, and remains a leading contender on the club’s list of potential targets.

Football Insider revealed in January that Steve Cooper, Russell Martin, Kevin Muscat and Derek McInnes are all in the running to take over.

However, there is a feeling that new contenders will emerge come the summer as alternative options who are currently in managerial positions could become available.
