Barry Ferguson: ‘I looked him in the eye and told the truth’ – this may have cost me the Rangers job
By Matt Farr
Rangers favourite Barry Ferguson has spilled the beans after missing out in the race to become Pedro Caixinha’s new assistant coach.
Ferguson, 39, was interviewed by Rangers to fill the vacant N0.3 position at Ibrox last month, but lost out to Jonatan Johansson, who was confirmed in the role last week.
However, in his latest column for the Daily Record, Ferguson admitted he didn’t feel all too confident about landing the role after meeting with the Portuguese manager.
He revealed that when he was asked where he saw himself in five years, he had told Caixinha he wanted his job as manager at Ibrox, an answer which he fears could have had an impact on the club’s final decision.
But he added that he would give the same answer if asked the question again, reiterating his desire to become manager of Rangers one day.
Ferguson wrote: “Of course I want to be the manager of Rangers one day. I would be lying to the man’s face if I said any different.
“There was a point when he asked me about my hopes and ambitions for the future and I looked him in the eye and told him the truth. There’s no point lying about it, that’s my ultimate aim.
“Did that cost me my chance of getting the job? I’ll probably never know the answer. But the truth is, for whatever reason, I left the meeting feeling pretty sure that I wasn’t his cup of tea.”
Ferguson spent most of his professional career at Rangers, in two spells either side of a short stint with English club Blackburn.
The former midfielder totalled 431 appearances at Ibrox, scoring 60 goals, and also served as club captain between 2000 and 2009.
He is still unemployed following his dismissal as manager of Scottish League Two side Clyde in February.
