‘Be very careful’ – Exclusive: Newcastle warned over jawdropping Pochettino deal

Michael Brown claims Newcastle United would be taking a risk appointing former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino as their new manager and handing him an extraordinary salary.

The former Premier League midfielder, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, insists the Magpies have to be “very careful” if they are to bring a new face into the dugout under new ownership.

As reported by Sky Sports, Pochettino is the number one choice of Newcastle’s prospective new board and they are willing to pay him a jawdropping £19million-a-year, equivalent to £365,000-a-week.

PCP Capital Partners are said to be on the brink of purchasing the club from Mike Ashley after the Sports Direct supremo’s 13 years in charge.

However, despite acknowledging Pochettino’s calibre as a manager, Brown believes Newcastle need to be wary about the impact a change of boss could have on their current squad.

Brown told Football Insider: “I think he’s a top-class manager, for sure, so I think any club with any sort of finances will be looking at him to be their manager.

“I think he’d be on the list of pretty much most teams to consider, for sure. For Newcastle, it depends on when the takeover happens, what sort of investment will go through, how quick will that come through, what’s the philosophy, what do they need to do, is there a style of play, is there not?

“The transition with the players that they’ve got, they’ve got to be very careful how they make that change, if that’s something they want to do because I think Steve Bruce has got it right.”

Pochettino was sacked by Tottenham back in November and replaced by former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho.

With the Premier League currently suspended, Bruce and his side sit 13th in the table with nine games left to play.

In other Newcastle United news, Darren Bent has touted the club to make a sensational move for Wilfried Zaha.
