Ben Davies set for extended spell on sidelines after new Tottenham development – pundit

Noel Whelan has claimed Clement Lenglet could be the “missing piece of the puzzle” in the Tottenham defence after his full debut against Fulham.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, backed the 27-year-old for a run of games in Antonio Conte’s side.

Lenglet replaced Davies in the lineup for the 2-1 win over Fulham on Saturday (3 September) – making his first-ever Premier League start.

The Wales international had started the previous 27 consecutive league matches in the left centre-back role in Antonio Conte’s three-man Spurs defence.

As per SofaScore, Lenglet won five of his eight duels, made three clearances, one block, and one tackle – as well as recording a 90% pass completion rate.

The 15-time France international joined Spurs during the summer window on a season-long loan from cash-strapped Barcelona.

Whelan claimed the defender has been identified by Conte as a potential upgrade on Davies.

He told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “He could be the missing piece of the puzzle in that defence.

“That’s why they’ve brought him in as cover, to have a look at him.

“We know Ben Davies is a fantastic player, and one of the most consistent performers they’ve had in recent years.

“But at the same time, that freshness and quality that Lenglet brings will just push Davies even more. Conte has obviously identified him as a potential upgrade there – and maybe we’ll see him get a run of games now.

Tottenham

“Tottenham seem to be on a really good run. They look solid – and that’s the Conte effect. They’re hard to beat, hard to break down – and he’s brought in players who will win football matches.

“They could be dark horses this season.”
