Ben Godfrey: Everton to green light move as Tottenham swoop – sources

Everton are prepared to sell Ben Godfrey to Tottenham in January if a bid is submitted, sources have told Football Insider.

Spurs are in the market for a new centre-back in January after losing both Eric Dier and Micky van de Ven to injury in recent weeks.

The North London side have shown an interest in Toffees duo Jarrad Branthwaite and Godfrey in recent weeks as they look to bolster their defensive options.

However, Football Insider revealed on Saturday (9 December) that Everton will refuse to sell Branthwaite over the January window.

Branthwaite, 21, is valued as a key player by Sean Dyche, and despite Everton’s financial issues they are determined to keep hold of him for their relegation fight.

However, Godfrey is set to be made available by the Merseyside club after falling out of favour at Goodison Park.

The 25-year-old has made just two appearances for Everton this season, playing the full 90 minutes of their EFL Cup clash against Doncaster Rovers and coming on as a late substitute in the 2-2 draw with Sheffield United.

Dyche has preferred to play Branthwaite alongside James Tarkoswki as his central defensive duo this season, with Godfrey competing with Michael Keane to be third-choice.

Godfrey signed for Everton for a £20million fee in 2020, but the Merseyside club are willing to take a loss in order to offload the English defender from their wage bill.

As revealed by Football Insider, Tottenham are also in a race with Man United for £40million-rated Jean-Clair Todibo.
