Benjamin Siegrist could be number one at Celtic after Sky reveal

Benjamin Siegrist will get plenty of game time at Celtic if he joins the club this summer.

That’s according to former Hoops hitman Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about a possible incoming at Parkhead.

As per Sky Sports (17 June) Celtic are in advanced talks to sign Dundee United goalkeeper Siegrist, 30.

The stopper is out of contract this summer and could provide back-up to Joe Hart next season.

Vasilis Barkas left the club to join FC Utrecht on loan on 7 June after failing to impress Ange Postecoglou.

With Celtic set to return to the Champions League group stage in 2022-23, McAvennie is sure Siegrist will play plenty of games if he joins the club.

“Barkas is away and Bain hasn’t done much wrong but he’s not a number one, for me,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“Siegrist could be number one. Not at the moment with Joe Hart the way he is.

“But, I think if he comes into the team when Joe is injured, I think it will be seamless. He is that good of a keeper.

“The boy has done well, there are a few teams after him. He will be the number two but there are that many games now, he will get games.

“Joe won’t be there forever either. It’s a no-brainer for me.”

Joe Hart made 54 appearances for the Hoops during the 2021-22 campaign.

He signed from Tottenham in the summer of 2021.

In other news, John Kennedy could be replaced at Celtic by a ‘big name’ with ‘star status’ after a Sky update.
