Bielsa is making Gelhardt ‘angry’ after what pundit has seen at Leeds
Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa has bided his time with Joe Gelhardt to make him ‘angry’ and ‘hungry’ to succeed.
That is the view of former Arsenal and Everton striker Kevin Campbell, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the 19-year-old’s recent influx of game time.
Gelhardt was given 37 minutes on Tuesday night as Marcelo Bielsa’s side were knocked out of the EFL Cup at Arsenal.
The young striker has featured in Leeds United’s last three fixtures across all competitions but is yet to start.
As quoted by the Yorkshire Evening Post yesterday Bielsa told Sky Sports Gelhardt’s game-changing performance against Wolves has increased his chance of playing regularly.
When asked by Football Insider if Bielsa has been wrongly holding back Gelhardt, Campbell said:
“The fans have been calling for Gelhardt to get more game time for some time now but Bielsa knows what he is doing. The timing is never too late when it is right, trust me.
“Bielsa is biding his time with Gelhardt to get that anger and hunger in him to go out and play.
“He is a very talented player. He proved it on Saturday.
“The key now is doing it again and again and again. There was flashes last night.
“I am very much looking forward to seeing this kid player more. It looks like he’s got a big future ahead of him.”
Speaking on a potential full debut for Gelhardt, Bielsa said: “In the last game he came on and he unbalanced the game.
“That’s not something simple to do and to have done so increases his chances of participating more frequently.”
