Rodgers to make major changes in key area as Celtic mainstay considers his future

COMMENT

Celtic could go into the Champions League qualifiers in July with a vastly different backline from the one the team currently has.

With a report in the Scottish Sun claiming that Dedryck Boyata is undecided about signing a new contract with the Hoops, he could be sold in the summer as he only has a year left on his current deal.

There is also doubt about Jozo Simunovic’s long-term future at the club, even though he signed a new contract only last year.

The Bosnian defender’s from has been very poor at times this season and it wouldn’t be that much of a shock if the Hoops accepted an offer for the 23-year-old in the summer.

The futures of Mikael Lustig and even January arrival Marvin Compper have to be in doubt because of the injury issues that both player have had in recent times.

It seems that when the Hoops begin their Champions League qualifiers, the only two players that seem certain to start are Kieran Tierney and Kristoffer Ajer, as Brendan Rodgers plots his way into the group stages once again.

There are question marks in every other position in the Hoops defence, and as it often takes time for transfers to be completed there is a good chance that the defence that begins the qualifiers isn’t the same as the one that ends it.

The Hoops may need to get some defensive reinforcements in sooner rather than later, if Boyata and Simunovic both depart.
