Billy Gilmour backed to join Premier League club after source’s Brighton reveal – pundit
Frank McAvennie has suggested a club like Southampton is the right destination for Billy Gilmour if he leaves Brighton.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former West Ham striker insisted Gilmour needs game time wherever he ends up next season.
The 21-year-old’s current contract at the AMEX runs until 2026 after he joined from Chelsea last summer.
Last week (29 March), sources told this site that Gilmour will leave the Seagulls on loan next season, with a full transfer unlikely at this stage.
Clubs in the Championship as well as the Premier League are believed to be interested in the midfielder ahead of the 2023-24 season.
Football Insider revealed (31 March) that Rangers are not currently in the race to re-sign the Scotland international.
Gilmour spent a season on loan at Norwich City during his tenure at Chelsea but struggled for game time before returning to Stamford Bridge.
When asked what kind of side Gilmour should be aiming to join next season, McAvennie told Football Insider: “One of the things Billy Gilmour has to do is go to a team where he is going to play every week.
“Brighton are doing so well at the moment they do not want to change things. Norwich were just idiots for not playing him, he could have done so well with them.

“He is going to struggle to get in to the Scotland team now but he will be part of the squad.
“Maybe a team like Southampton. He needs to go to a team that are struggling to keep the ball. He will keep the ball all day long.“
