Billy Gilmour told to complete permanent Chelsea exit as talks reported – pundit

Noel Whelan has urged Billy Gilmour to push from a permanent move away from Chelsea this summer after he was axed from their pre-season tour.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested he doesn’t see where the 21-year-old fits in at Stamford Bridge after an underwhelming loan at Norwich City.

As per The Telegraph (19 July), Gilmour is set to hold talks with Thomas Tuchel after dropping down from the first-team’s pre-season tour to the Under-23 set-up.

The report claims the Scotland international is “increasingly likely” to be loaned out again – with former boss Frank Lampard interested in bringing him to Everton.

Gilmour is out of contract at Chelsea in June 2024.

Whelan urged the young midfielder to seek a permanent move in order to take an important first step in forging a successful career.

“I don’t see where he’s going with Chelsea,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“The fact that this will be his second loan in two seasons – that tells a story. He’s 21 and in the Scotland side, but not in the Chelsea side – the writing is on the wall.

“He’s not needed at the club. He needs to try and get a permanent move somewhere and get settled at that club.

“That’s the only way you can start forging your career properly and feeling like you belong somewhere.

Chelsea

“It’s very easy to end up just being volleyed by Chelsea every season and going back out on loan every summer.

“It can’t be a good feeling to have a club paying you to go and play somewhere else.”
