Billy Stark raves about Celtic 20-year-old, states he is a modern player
By Derek Smithson
Billy Stark has heaped praise on Celtic youngster Kundai Benyu following his summer arrival.
The 20-year-old completed a move to the Bhoys following the expiration of his contract at Ipswich and has made a good start to his career with the Scottish giants.
The central midfielder scored on his debut for the development squad and also played in a friendly against Lyon.
His only senior football during his career came in the National League during a loan spell with Aldershot and is not expected to make an immediate impact in the Celtic first team.
However, Stark has raved about the qualities of the midfielder and described him as a modern player.
“He looks to have all the attributes managers look for in modern players,” Stark said, as quoted by the Daily Record. “He has that physicality and he is quick as well.
“I don’t want to go overboard about the lad but he looked the part. He managed to score – although it might not have been the cleanest of contacts – and he moved the ball about nicely.”
Benyu will face very tough competition if he is to make inroads into Brendan Rodgers’ side for the upcoming season.
The central midfielder will have to compete for a spot alongside the likes of Scott Brown, Stuart Armstrong, Nir Bitton, Eboue Kouassi and Callum McGregor.
However, the Bhoys are set to rotate their squad with such a busy fixture list ahead of them throughout the season and Rodgers has shown a willingness to promote youngsters.
In other Celtic news, an English defender is expected to move to Parkhead.
