Bizarre Leeds transfer explained
By Harry Sykes
Leeds United recruitment chief Victor Orta has revealed that new signing Ouasim Buoy has been loaned out to Spain to prepare him to be a first-teamer at Elland Road.
United announced on Wednesday that they had made Buoy their 11th summer signing after snapping him up as a free agent following his departure from Juventus at the end of June.
But the Dutchman will spend the 2017-18 season at Spanish second-tier club Cultural Leonesa rather than in the Championship.
The deal has confused supporters, who have questioned why a 24-year-old who has been on the books of the Italian champions for five years is not able to immediately play Championship football after being deemed worthy of a four-year contract.
Leeds director of football Orta shed some light into what initially appears a bizarre deal.
Former Holland Under-19 international Buoy had been under contract with Juventus since 2012 but made just a single appearance for their senior side.
He has spent the past two seasons on loan in Holland with PEC Zwolle, making 42 appearances across all competitions.
Buoy has had loan spells in Germany, Greece and Italy with Brescia, Hamburg, Panathaniakos and Palermo.
He, began his career in midfield, predominantly as a defensive midfielder, but has subsequently switched to play at centre-back.
In other Leeds United news, the Yorkshire giants have ramped up their interest in signing one of the best left-backs in the Championship.
