‘Very bizarre’ – Sutton slams Rodgers for hamfisted handling of Celtic player
Chris Sutton has slammed Celtic for their hamfisted handling of striker Moussa Dembele and his possible departure from the club in the January transfer window.
Dembele has been constantly linked with a move away from Celtic Park in recent weeks, with the Daily Star recently reporting that up to four Premier League clubs are interested in signing the player.
The French under-21 international hasn’t featured for the Hoops that often in recent weeks, and Sutton believes that will make teams in the Premier League less likely to spend big money on the 21-year-old.
As quoted in his column in the Daily Record, the BT Sports pundit finds the way the Hoops have dealt with the situation ‘bizarre’.
“In fairness, I have found the entire episode recently regarding the strikers at Celtic all very bizarre. Rodgers has been brilliant at Celtic but I’m not sure where he’s been going with this issue”, he said, before launching into another salvo.
“However, in the past 10 games, Dembele has started just two and this is what I find odd. England’s big clubs will be looking at that situation and wondering why he’s not first pick.”
He also declared how much money the striker should be sold for if he is to depart in January: “He should be going for £30m. At the absolute minimum, a fee of £25m. No less.”
The striker is set to return to the Celtic side in Saturday’s Old Firm derby against Rangers. Dembele has a great record against Rangers, scoring five goals against them last season, including the first hat-trick in a league match between the clubs since January 1966.
Dembele had a superb first season in Glasgow, scoring 32 goals as the Hoops completed their first domestic treble since 2016 and first undefeated league season since the 1890s.
He hasn’t been as prolific this season due to injuries but still managed to score against PSG in the Champions League group stages.
