Breaking: Man United ‘will not pay’ Newcastle United’s Dan Ashworth compensation demand

Man United will not pay £20million to land Newcastle United sporting director Dan Ashworth, sources have told Football Insider.

Football Insider revealed last week (14 February) that Newcastle chief Ashworth agreed terms on a move to United and informed the Magpies of his intention to leave.

The St James’ Park club have now confirmed that the 52-year-old has been placed on a period of gardening leave.

Newcastle CEO Darren Eales said: “Our exciting journey doesn’t stop and the process to recruit a new sporting director will begin immediately.”

Man United continue Ashworth talks after Newcastle £20million demand revealed

Negotiations are now ongoing between the two clubs as the Magpies look to cash in on Ashworth.

He is under contract in the north east until June 2026 and it is believed the Tyneside club will initially ask for as much as £20million.

Man United have baulked at that initial price tag and talks will continue.

Football Insider revealed last week (15 February) that Ashworth feels there are “too many voices” involved with recruitment at Newcastle – and also feels he has been unable to make the signings he wants.

Man United are expected to spend big in the coming years after investment from Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS, who have taken control of footballing operations at the club.

However, Ashworth’s arrival may not be good news for manager Erik ten Hag – with Football Insider revealing (16 February) that he does not see the Dutchman as a long-term United manager.
