Brendan Rodgers confirms talks with Celtic senior player over future

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers has confirmed he’s held talks over Scott Brown’s international future with Scotland ahead of next month’s friendly with Holland at Pittodrie.

Brown retired from international football once already before changing his mind to help Gordon Strachan’s side in their recent failed World Cup qualifying campaign.

The 32-year-old midfielder’s Scotland future is up in the air at the moment following Strachan’s sacking, however Rodgers admitted he was quite happy to leave the decision up to Brown.

Northern Irishman Rodgers also made it clear that he had spoken with both the Hoops senior player and interim Scotland boss Malky Mackay over Brown’s international future.

“I spoke to Scott, I had a good meeting,” Rodgers said as quoted by the Evening Times.

“I also spoke with Malky in the week, he’s going into a game with Holland and he’ll want to do well in it as will the players.

“I have my feelings on it with Scott and I’ll always say that to him but ultimately it’s down to him and his body and where he’s at.”

Scotland don’t have a competitive match for almost a year so there is no rush for Brown to decide his next move immediately.

The failure to qualify for next summer’s World Cup has left the Scots with a huge gap between competitive games ahead of the inaugural UEFA Nations League kicking off next year.

Scotland finished third in their World Cup qualifying group behind after a draw in the final qualification match left the Tartan Army out of the play-off places and extending their absence from a major tournament to at least 22 years.

Brown has picked up 55 caps for Scotland and is the current captain of the national team.

In other Celtic news, this attacker has picked up a major injury blow ahead of one of the Hoops’ biggest fixtures of the season.
