Brendan Rodgers delivers verdict on reports of Celtic 29-year-old wanting to quit club

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers has rubbished speculation linking Scott Sinclair with a move away from the Hoops in the summer.

The 29-year-old attacker has struggled to recapture the form that won him player of the year last season, and the Scottish Sun recently reported that the player wanted to quit Parkhead and return to England in the summer.

Rodgers has dismissed the speculation though, and has insisted that Sinclair will have a huge role to play as the Bhoys aim to win an unprecedented second consecutive domestic treble.

“Scott is very happy here,” Rodgers said, as quoted by the Herald.

“Of course he hasn’t played in the last few games because we changed the tactical ideas of the team.

“But this is a period of the season now that he loves. He is a really competitive player and he turns it on in the big games. He is still very important to what we do.”

Despite finding it difficult to match the standards he set last season and being left out of the starting line-up in recent weeks, Sinclair is still the Hoops’ top scorer this season with 17 goals

Football Insider verdict

You wouldn’t expect the Hoops boss to say anything different about a player who has been a huge success in his short time at the club, despite his indifferent performances for much of this season. Rodgers will be wanting to keep Sinclair’s confidence high, as the Bhoys head into a vital few weeks of the season. However, with his family still in England it wouldn’t be too much of a shock if Sinclair and the club decided that it would be best for all concerned if the player moved on in the summer, but until then he still has a job to do for the Hoops, and if he can recapture his form of earlier in the season Sinclair can be a huge player going forward for the Bhoys for the rest of the season.
