Celtic boss delivers verdict on troubled Mark Warburton
By Matt Farr
Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers is full of sympathy for Rangers chief and rival Mark Warburton amid speculation over his future.
Warburton is believed to be on the end of his tether at Ibrox, following a less than satisfactory spell in charge as Rangers boss.
However, speaking to the Daily Record, Rodgers has admitted that he feels sorry for his under-fire rival.
Rangers are currently third in the Scottish Premiership, 27 points behind league leaders Celtic, while they are behind Aberdeen on goal difference.
However, the minimum requirement for Rangers this season is to finish second, and the Ibrox hierarchy appear frustrated at the failure to stave off competition from Aberdeen and Hearts.
With a Scottish Cup clash against minnows Morton on Sunday, a negative result for Warburton could be the end for him as Rangers boss.
Rodgers, meanwhile, is revelling in his side’s success this season, and with two titles nearly in the bag, he has his sights set on a domestic treble.
Speaking about Warburton, he said: “I have empathy for every single manager – Mark, others, when it is tough.
“Winning games will stop the critics but in the end they are still there.
“There are groups [of supporters] who if you win five they’ll say you should have won seven. ‘You won 5-2? Why did you let in the two goals?’ You can never win.”
Rodgers has also had the pleasure of beating Warburton’s side on three separate occasions this season, scoring eight goals and conceding just two.
The former Brentford boss arrived at Ibrox in June 2015 on a three-year-deal, leading the club to immediate promotion back into the Scottish top-flight, as well as the Scottish League Cup title.
However, Warburton has won just half of his 24 league games in charge this season, and currently has just one win from their last five league matches.
In other Rangers news, Warburton must hand this emerging striker an opportunity to impress against Morton.
