Rodgers: This is how Murty has transformed Rangers after Caixinha sacking

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers believes Rangers have been transformed to play “more direct” under Graeme Murty than they had been under Mark Warburton or Pedro Caixinha.

Murty has been handed the Gers hotseat until the end of the season and will come up against Rodgers for the second time in Saturday’s Old Firm clash at Celtic Park.

The former Scotland international replaced both Warburton and Caixinha on an interim basis before being given the job full-time last week.

Rodgers believes the Gers look to get the ball forward quicker and play in behind their opponents rather than the largely pointless passing for passing’s sake that became a feature under Warburton in particular.

“They look a bit more direct. Not so much build-up from behind,” Rodgers said, as quoted by the Daily Record.

“When Mark (Warburton) was there and Pedro (Caixinha) they tried to build their game from behind and work their way through the thirds.

“Now it goes forward that but quicker and they look to play from there.”

Murty has won seven of his eleven games in charge since replacing Caixinha in the Ibrox dugout and managed to hold to Hoops to a 1-1 draw at Celtic Park in his previous Old Firm experience in March.

The 43-year-old is the only one of the three to have avoided defeat against Celtic in the league since the Gers made their return to the Scottish Premiership last season.

Since Murty has taken over, the Gers have also seen a massive tactical overhaul with the 4-3-3 used by both Murty and Caixinha axed in favour of a midfield diamond and two strikers.
