Brendan Rodgers shocks Graham Spiers with what he did in Celtic loss at Rangers
Brendan Rodgers was bested by Philippe Clement because of a surprise first-ever failing in his time as Celtic boss, according to Graham Spiers.
Rodgers’ side lost for the first time in the league this season after they were battered 3-0 by their Old Firm rivals Rangers on Thursday (2 January).
Goals scored by Ianis Hagi, Robin Propper, and Danilo secured the derby victory for Clement, as they sit 11 points behind the Bhoys in the league table.
However, Rodgers was under scrutiny for his in-game moves by a stunned Spiers, who is a sports journalist for the Scottish edition of The Times.
He gave his review of the match on X and said: “I think this is the first time I can ever say this in Scottish football – Brendan Rodgers’ substitutions had absolutely zero impact.
“All four of them. Indeed, Celtic’s substitutions almost appeared to make the situation worse.
“Rodgers is a terrific Celtic manager. He is one of the best British managers on the scene. Celtic are blessed to have him. But Phillipe Clement bested him today and maybe for a second time – in terms of pure football – in 17 days”.
Celtic are favourites so Brendan Rodgers can’t let this loss affect their season
Football Insider opinion
The former Leicester City manager would not have been pleased with his team’s performance, including his decisions regarding substitutions.
Almost none of the players rose to the occasion, which is uncharacteristic of a Celtic side in an Old Firm derby.
Criticism of his tactics is justified, as such a display is unusual for both the coach and the team.

Star players like Reo Hatate faced scrutiny for their underwhelming performances, particularly in a match where fans, teammates, and the coach look to such players for inspiration.
Captain Callum McGregor also made headlines, though more for the wrong reasons than the right, adding further frustration.
Despite the disappointing performance, Celtic remain 11 points clear at the top of the table. They also boast the earlier victory over Rangers in the Scottish League Cup final—a result that still stings the opposition fanbase.
The last thing the coach needs now is for that 11-point gap to shrink any further.
