Brentford open preliminary talks to sign Wolves star Mason Rees – sources

Brentford have opened preliminary talks to sign Wolves midfielder Mason Rees, sources have told Football Insider.

Football Insider first revealed earlier this month that Wolves have told the 18-year-old he is free to find a new club this summer.

Rees only signed his first professional contract with the West Midlands club last August, penning a two-year deal until 2025.

Wolves have now informed the central midfielder he can leave Molineux once the transfer window reopens next month, with Brentford in talks to take him to west London.

The teenager has seen his pathway blocked with Gary O’Neil’s side by two signings from Premier League champions Manchester City.

Wanderers have secured the addition of midfielder Tommy Doyle for £4.3million after deciding to turn his loan deal from the Citizens into a permanent transfer.

Wolves exit on cards for Mason Rees after Brentford talks

Wolves chiefs previously viewed Rees as a promising talent for the future after handing him a contract just nine months ago.

The Solihull-born midfielder featured 11 times in Premier League 2 across the season, while he registered an assist for the U-21s in their EFL Trophy defeat against Derby County last November.

But an exit from Molineux is now on the cards for the teen as Brentford plot a move to add him to their ranks this summer.

Finances are currently extremely tight for Wanderers, with the club toeing the financial fair play line to ensure they are not handed any potential charges.

O’Neil will likely have to part ways with at least one of his star players this summer after Football Insider revealed on 17 May that Wolves could have to cash in on either Pedro Neto, Max Kilman, Joao Gomes or Rayan Ait-Nouri to balance the books.

In other news, West Ham have been tipped to sign multiple Wolves stars.
