Medical insider names Jakub Moder’s new Brighton return date after second ACL blow

Brighton star Jakub Moder is now likely to miss the World Cup with Poland and return in February next year after undergoing a second ACL surgery.

That is the view of medical expert Ben Dinnery, who runs the Premier Injuries site and has a background in injury and data analysis.

Moder, 23, suffered damage to his anterior cruciate ligament in Brighton’s 0-0 draw with Norwich City in April.

The 20-time Poland midfielder underwent surgery shortly after and harboured hopes of recovering in time for the winter World Cup in Qatar.

But as relayed by The Athletic on Monday (1 August), he has been forced to undergo a second operation after complications during his rehabilitation.

Dinnery forecasts that he will now return in early 2023.

“Jakub Moder was rehabbing in his homeland in Poland and, when he returned, reported some stiffness in the joint,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

“That is not necessarily uncommon. It’s not a major setback in the grand scheme of things. The club have stated that it is a complex injury. But it’s multi-factorial and the recovery from serious injuries is rarely straightforward.

“There are always going to be minor issues and setbacks. From the outside looking in, there may be concerns. But internally, this is part of the process. It was always a risk that this would crop up.

“Some had suggested that he was hoping to be back in time for the World Cup. But that was always likely to be a reach too far, even though this won’t massively inhibit on the return-to-play timeline.

“We’re still looking early 2023, maybe around February time. It’s just something that needs to be addressed and dealt with. I’m sure he’ll be back in his recovery rehab very quickly.”
