'Brilliant news', 'Get in' – Leeds fans react to player update ahead of Sheffield Utd clash
By Richard Parks
Pontus Jansson has been passed fit by new Leeds United manager Paul Heckingbottom for Saturday’s clash against Sheffield United – fans have taken to Twitter to express their delight.
Jansson was stretchered off with an injury 30 minutes into Leeds’ 4-1 defeat at Cardiff City last weekend as the injury and suspension crisis that decimated Thomas Christiansen’s options in the final weeks of his rein plumbed new depths.
Christiansen subsequently gave a pessimistic verdict on the giant Swede’s fitness and claimed he did not expect him to be involved in the Saturday lunchtime clash at Bramall Lane.
But Heckingbottom revealed at his inaugural press conference this afternoon (Thursday) that Jansson “has trained today” and will be fit for the Yorkshire derby this weekend.
It is especially essential that the Sweden international is available to feature as Bramall Lane as fellow defenders Luke Ayling and Conor Shaughnessy are on crutches and wearing a protective boot respectively, while Liam Cooper and Gaetano Berardi are finishing and starting suspensions after recent red cards.
Leeds fans on social media are delighted that their most commanding defender will be available for selection, with “brilliant news” and “get in” among the comments.
