'Brilliant player' - Exclusive: Levy preliminary moves to seal Spurs signing hailed by pundit

Noel Whelan has urged Tottenham to sign "brilliant" Willian this summer as they make preliminary moves for the Chelsea man.

The former Leeds United forward, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, suggested if you are a Premier League side not looking at the 31-year-old you have a "real issue".

Willian is out-of-contract this summer having spent seven seasons with Chelsea.

When asked whether the winger would be a good signing for the Lilywhites, Whelan told Football Insider"It was Mourinho that signed him.

"He is one player that when you watch him for Chelsea - can still do it. I can see what Frank wants to do, use him until the end of the season because he has been there for such a long time and is very professional. You can see the quality he still possesses.

"If you are not looking at him in the Premier League there is a real issue there, you must have some brilliant players like Willian - he is dangerous, scores goals and will make a difference.

"He would fit straight in at Tottenham and Harry Kane and Son Heung-min would benefit from having him in the side. On a free - win-win."

Willian was very close to joining the North-London club back in 2013 and even passed a medical ahead of a proposed move.

However, Jose Mourinho, manager of Chelsea at the time, hijacked the deal and brought the Brazilian to Stamford Bridge.

The winger has made 37 appearances for Frank Lampard's side this season, scoring seven.
