Bruno Fernandes: Man United star could face FA action ‘today’ after footage emerges – ex-Fifa official

Man United midfielder Bruno Fernandes could face retrospective action from the FA after Saturday’s draw with Southampton.

That is according to ex-FIFA and Premier League referee Keith Hackett, speaking exclusively Football Insider about the 27-year-old’s “vicious attempted strike” on James Ward-Prowse.

As shown on PoorEPLreferees Twitter (12 February), Fernandes lashed out following a tangle with Ward-Prowse at Old Trafford.

However, neither on-field referee Stuart Attwell nor VAR official Jarred Gillett flagged the incident.

Hackett believes retrospective action could be taken if neither match official spotted the incident at the time.

“Fernandes is lucky to escape a red card,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs. “That is an attempted strike.

“People often think you have to hit the person to get sent off. Attempting to strike an opponent is a red card offence and he’s swung out pretty viciously.

“I was surprised when I saw the clip because I didn’t see it when watching the game. I presume the referee and VAR both missed it.

“It is one of those where Fernandes is at risk if the FA decide to ask the question. They might ask the referees if they’ve seen the incident and then go through a process.

“When an incident has not been seen by match officials, they can charge the player. Fernandes is on a tightrope in the next few fours. They will hopefully sort it today, as to whether they will take it further.”
