Bruno Fernandes told to ‘stop moaning’ after confirmed Man United axe

Alan Hutton has claimed Man United should reconsider handing the captaincy to vice-skipper Bruno Fernandes.

The former Tottenham and Rangers defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 28-year-old’s on-pitch “moaning” could preclude him from taking the role.

As quoted by club media (16 July), Maguire confirmed he will be replaced as captain of Man United following “discussions” with manager Erik ten Hag.

Maguire insisted it was a “huge privilege” to be in the role and thanked the Old Trafford faithful for their support during his tenure.

Vice-captain Fernandes took on the role in most games from which the England international was absent in the 2022-23 campaign.

But the Portugal international, who has been at the club since January 2020, has faced criticism over his on-pitch demeanour from fellow players and pundits alike.

Former Man United skipper Gary Neville went public earlier this year to tell Fernandes to “stop moaning” after an on-pitch clash with Jadon Sancho.

When asked who should succeed Maguire in the role, Hutton told Football Insider: “It’s interesting.

“Everyone is speaking about Fernandes. He obviously took on the responsibility when Maguire was out of the side.

“I don’t know him personally, but do I see him as a captain? I’m not sure.

“He’s always flinging his hands up and moaning.

“You’d think Bruno is at the top of the list, but we’ll see who comes in and who leaves in the rest of the transfer window.”
