Burnley board blame ‘poor signings’ for imminent relegation’

Burnley chiefs blame their lacklustre signings on their expected relegation – not Vincent Kompany, sources have told Football Insider.

The Clarets reportedly spent over £90million last summer on new recruits in their attempts to remain in the Premier League.

Well-placed sources have told Football Insider that they deem many of their new additions “poor” and unfit for the top flight.

They bought the likes of Dara O’Shea from West Brom, Sander Berge from Sheffield United and Aaron Ramsey from Aston Villa, but none have managed to help the club avoid a relegation dogfight.

Manager Kompany has struggled to thrive in the Premier League following his exceptional Championship campaign last season.

Burnley point blame on expected Premier League relegation

However, sources have told Football Insider (1 March) that he is expected to remain at Turf Moor even if the club returns to the second tier.

The board believe that he is the right man to guide them immediately back to the Premier League after his 101-point haul last season as Championship winners.

The Clarets currently have just 13 points and are 11 points away from 17th-place Nottingham Forest.

They have the second-worst defensive record in the league, with just the Blades managing an inferior record.

They have managed just three wins from 26 Premier League games – their last coming in late December with a 2-0 win away against Fulham.

Burnley sit 19th in the Premier League table following their 3-0 defeat against Crystal Palace on Saturday afternoon (24 February).

They are next in action against Bournemouth at Turf Moor on Sunday afternoon (3 March).
