Callum Wilson playing for his Newcastle future after source’s update – Pundit

Callum Wilson will be playing for his Newcastle United future when he returns from injury.

That’s according to former Leeds United stopper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the striker’s return to first-team training.

This site revealed on Tuesday (15 March) that Wilson is confident of returning from his calf injury before the final five games of the season.

A Newcastle source has told Football Insider that the striker has targeted a possible return to first-team action for the Norwich City clash on 23 April.

Wilson has been sidelined since injuring his calf in the first half of the Magpies’ draw against Man United in December 2021.

Whenever he returns, Kenny insists Wilson will be trying to prove he is worth keeping around.

“Newcastle haven’t had it easy with strikers recently,” Kenny told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“Wilson is the best they have had in years but he’s never fit. It’s so frustrating for them.

“Wood hasn’t quite done it for them, he still just has the one goal.

“So they will be looking for at least one striker in the summer, it’s whether they will be looking for two or not.

“Wilson, when fit, is brilliant. There is absolutely no doubting that.

“But you can’t really rely on him to be fit over the season, so that’s something that needs to happen.

“A new striker has to come in and Wilson knows. He’s under pressure, he is playing for his future, make no doubt about it.”

Wilson has netted six goals in 15 Premier League appearances this term.

Eddie Howe’s side are next in action against Tottenham on 3 April.
