Callum Wilson: Pundit issues ‘massive’ Newcastle claim after journalist’s update

The timely return of Callum Wilson will be “massively important” to hopes of survival at Newcastle United, according to Paul Robinson.

The former England goalkeeper, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 29-year-old is the Magpies’ “only out-and-out goalscorer”.

As per Daily Mail journalist Craig Hope (7 February), Wilson has “no return date” after suffering a calf injury in December, with Eddie Howe hoping the striker will return for the “last few games of the season”.

Chris Wood was signed from relegation rivals Burnley in January in the wake of the England international’s injury.

Robinson backed the pair to thrive alongside Allan Saint-Maximin when Wilson eventually returns.

“They’ve got Wood in, but Wilson is someone who they look to for goals,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs.

“Wood has been brought in to plug the gap, but for me – Wilson is their only out-and-out goalscorer.

“I think the pair of them would work really well together, playing off one another.

“When needed they could use Wood as a target man and Wilson as the legs to try and stretch defences.

“Wilson is the best striker they’ve got. I think when he’s back fit, they’ll play the two of them together alongside Saint-Maximin.

“It’s massively important that they bring him back into the side and then keep him fit. You can’t have him breaking down again after coming back.

“It’s going to be key to their survival.”

Newcastle

Newcastle face 16th-place Everton tonight with the possibility of moving to within just one point of the Toffees.

Wood is yet to score for the Magpies and has netted just three goals in 19 top-flight games this term.
