Calvin Bassey: West Ham could sign Rangers player for ‘millions’ after source reveal – Hutton

West Ham would have to pay “millions” to prise Calvin Bassey away from Rangers, according to Alan Hutton.

The former Gers defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 22-year-old has the potential to develop into a “top player”.

This site revealed on Monday (7 February) that West Ham are keeping tabs on Bassey after losing out to Rangers in 2020.

A Hammers source told Football Insider that the youngster is on their radar ahead of the summer as they look to recruit a left-footed defender – with the former Leicester man able to play centre-back and left-back.

Bassey has made 29 Rangers appearances this term in his breakthrough season at Ibrox.

Hutton hailed the starlet’s “defensive qualities”, claiming he has all the attributes to “make the jump” to the Premier League.

“He’s certainly progressing well,” he told Football Insider‘s Russell Edge.

“He was very raw when he first turned up at Rangers. I think he’s got that aggression in his game and he’s developing nicely.

“He’s shown that he can play in a few positions as well.

“There’s no doubt, for me, of his defensive qualities. He’s strong, his one-v-one defending is brilliant, he’s difficult to get past.

“It’s just the final third he needs to improve, but he’s made strides there too – it looks like he’s been watching James Tavernier at times.

“You can see that he ticks a lot of boxes as a young player who could potentially make that jump to the Premier League.

“West Ham would have to pay millions. He’s got the potential to develop into a top player.”

Rangers

Bassey joined Rangers for £300,000 in the summer of 2020.

West Ham failed with a bid for the versatile defender earlier that year when he was running down his contract at Leicester City.

In other news, Scottish pundit can’t believe Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s treatment of Rangers’ “best player”.
