Campbell claims Aubameyang ‘deal going to be done’ after major Arsenal development

Kevin Campbell has insisted Arsenal will be happy to take a financial hit in order to get Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang out of the club.

The former Gunners striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed a potential exit for the 32-year-old will be unaffected by this month’s African Cup of Nations.

As per the Athletic (30 December), Aubameyang has joined up with Gabon as they gear up for the showpiece tournament in Cameroon – which starts on 9 January.

The striker remains out in the cold at Arsenal, with a discipline breach last month resulting in him being stripped of the club captaincy by manager Mikel Arteta.

Campbell suggested the Gunners will be looking to recoup as much as they can in order to replace the hitman.

“I don’t think the AFCON will get in the way. If a club wants him, they’ll fly out there don’t worry about that,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“The logistics don’t matter anymore. The world’s a big place, but it’s a small place.

“He just wants to get back to scoring goals, and doing what he does best. Arsenal have gone on to bigger and better things since he’s been out.

“I don’t know how committed he is to Arsenal, but it seems like there’s going to be a deal done. To not come out and say something after all this – it’s strange.

“They’ll have to take a hit, but it’s probably a hit Arsenal are willing to take if they can get most of his wages off the bill and get someone else in.”

Aubameyang last played for Arsenal on 6 December in the 2-1 loss against Everton.

The striker has scored seven goals in 15 games this term.
