Campbell rules Kennedy out of Celtic job due to Gerrard at Rangers
Kevin Campbell claims Celtic won’t appoint John Kennedy as he doesn’t have a big enough name to help with their summer recruitment.
The former Arsenal and Everton striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted that Celtic will try to find their own Steven Gerrard after making Rangers ‘very strong’ since his Ibrox appointment.
This site first revealed last week that Eddie Howe was having second thoughts on taking over at Celtic after reaching a verbal agreement with the club.
Howe’s representative has stated that he will not return to management until the summer which has left Celtic searching for alternatives.
Kennedy has been in charge of Celtic since Neil Lennon’s resignation in February with the club yet to appoint a new boss.
Campbell admitted that there is the possibility of Kennedy being offered the job on a permanent basis but he claimed Kennedy’s name won’t help the club in their summer recruitment.
“There could be a possibility of him getting the Celtic job permanently, for sure,” Campbell told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs.
“I just think that the club may go in another direction and get a more recognised manager in because of what Steven Gerrard is doing over at Rangers.
“He’s picking the carcass of some English clubs and look how strong they are now, they’re very strong.
“The name has to be right for recruitment which might go against John Kennedy.”
Celtic are gearing up to face Rangers in the Scottish Cup on Sunday and a win will boost the club’s chances of winning silverware after a disappointing league campaign.
The Hoops began their post-split season with a 6-0 hammering of Livingston as their mini unbeaten streak stretched to five games in all competitons.
