Campbell unhappy with ‘very strange’ Aubameyang reaction at Arsenal amid ‘100 per cent’ behind-the-scenes claim

Kevin Campbell has slammed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for not addressing Arsenal fans after being stripped of the captaincy.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Highbury favourite claimed “something is going on in the background” regarding the 32-year-old’s future.

Aubameyang was not included in the League Cup squad that beat Sunderland on Tuesday night.

The Gabon international has been frozen out since a disciplinary breach which cost him the captaincy earlier this month.

Speaking to club media (22 December), Mikel Arteta said Aubameyang would be considered for selection on a “game by game” basis.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs if the door was still open for the striker, Campbell said: “I can only see the inevitable happening with Aubameyang.

“The writing is on the wall as far as I’m concerned because is not showing that he is committed to the club.

“He hasn’t even come out and apologised. He should have come out and said, ‘I’m committed to Arsenal. My form has dipped, I’ve lost the captaincy but I want to get back in the team.’ We haven’t heard any of that.

“For him to be keeping quiet is very strange to me. Something is going on in the background, 100 per cent.”

Aubameyang has contributed seven goals and two assists in 15 appearances across all competitions this season.

He has 18 months remaining on the mega-money contract he signed in the summer of 2020.
