Caoimhin Kelleher to quit Liverpool? ‘It’s time to go’

Caoimhin Kellher wants to leave Liverpool at the end of the season in search of more regular first-team action elsewhere as Alisson nears his return.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson explained that he is keen to take the step up given his age, at 26 years old, and “exceptional” performances of late.

Robinson, who made 374 Premier League appearances during spells with Leeds, Tottenham, Blackburn and Burnley, explained that being the second-choice keeper is “very difficult”.

Kelleher knows that, regardless of his performances on the pitch and in training, Alisson will return as Liverpool’s number one upon his recovery.

The arrival of Giorgi Mamardashvili in the summer is set to push the Ireland international even further down the pecking order, and he is not looking to compete with the new arrival.

As a result, he is keen to leave Liverpool and become the first-choice option elsewhere at the end of the season as he has grown tired of being a backup option.

Caoimhin Kelleher wants to leave Liverpool in new twist

Football Insider revealed on 12 November that Kelleher wants to quit Liverpool in next summer’s transfer window amid interest from Premier League clubs.

Now, Robinson has insisted that his performances for Liverpool so far this season have proven he is capable of being the first-choice goalkeeper elsewhere, and he will look to make that step up.

I was asked to rank the top three goalkeepers in the Premier League this season, and Kellher was my number one,” he told Football Insider.

“It’s very hard to be a number two goalkeeper, the mentality is very different.

“Regardless of what you do in training, you know you’re not going to play every week, especially when you’re up against someone like Alisson.

“You can have the best week you’ve ever had in training, but if Alisson is fit, he plays.

“Regardless of what Kelleher does between now and Alisson’s return, when he’s back, he plays.

“That’s the very difficult life of a number two. He’s been exceptional this season, but he understands his role.

“Next year, I think he wants to be a number one. With the opportunities he’s had and the age he’s at, he doesn’t want to compete with Mamardashvili or be on the bench.

“It’s his time to go to another club and go and be the number one goalkeeper.

“So, Liverpool fans, enjoy him while you’ve got him because I think he will be moving on come the end of this season.”
