Jamie Carragher compares Liverpool to Man United, shares what is lacking
By Harvey Byrne
Jamie Carragher has shared that he believes Liverpool are lacking the strength in depth that the other top sides such as Manchester United boast.
The Reds fell to a 2-0 defeat against the relegation battling Tigers at the weekend, adding to a terrible run of form which has seen just one win from 10 matches in all competitions.
The defeat has seen them fall down to fifth place in the league table following an impressive start to the campaign.
They are in serious danger of failing to qualify for the Champions League once again and Carragher believes it stems from not signing any reinforcements in the January window to improve their squad as a whole.
“Liverpool don’t have the squad to match the other teams and are in a major fight for the top four,” told Carragher, as quoted by the Sky Sports website.
“For how great everything was going a few months ago, it shows how quickly everything can just unravel.
“A major disappointment, whether it was down to the manager or the board, was not getting any reinforcements in in January. The players are there. I am not saying panic buy.
“At this moment, there are lots of problems, defensively and in attack, but I am talking about in terms of numbers, Liverpool needed something.
“If you look at Liverpool’s bench, they haven’t got anything like what Manchester United have got, City have got – these are the teams they are trying to compete with.
“The fact that they haven’t reinforced from a position of strength – where they were in the league as the best challengers for Chelsea – has meant they have fallen away.”
Many of the top sides in the Premier League avoided the January window due to the pricing of players alongside manager’s having faith in their squads.
But, it is felt that clubs like Manchester United, Chelsea and Tottenham have strength all over the pitch, while Liverpool are short in the goalkeeper, defensive and centre-forward positions.
Jurgen Klopp’s side’s next set of fixtures doesn’t look to be getting any easier either as they host second placed Spurs at Anfield before travelling to face champions Leicester and then lining up against close competitors Arsenal.
There is currently just one point between Liverpool and their fierce Manchester rivals in sixth place and the Reds will be keen to improve their form soon as they aim to end their wait for Champions League football.
