Carragher: Liverpool must make these three signings to mount 2017-18 title challenge

By Will Butcher

Jamie Carragher believes Jurgen Klopp must conduct a complete reshuffle of the Liverpool defence in the summer transfer window.

Liverpool have conceded the most goals out of the Premier League’s top seven clubs, keeping just seven clean sheets in 30 top-flight encounters.

Speaking to Sky Sports Premier League Daily Show on Monday morning, Carragher urged Klopp to bring a new goalkeeper, centre-back and left-back to Anfield in the summer.

“The problem for Liverpool is defending,” Carragher said. “For me, I’d bring in a keeper, centre-back and left-back. Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren are not strong or robust enough.

“Klopp has said that he likes his goalkeepers, but it is obvious that improvement is needed in that area.

“Klavan is not a bad player, but he’s playing too much for a third-choice centre-back. Milner has done brilliantly at left-back, but you need a left-footed player there too.”

The Reds have been repeatedly reported as being interested in Man City goalkeeper Joe Hart, who is currently on loan with Serie A side Torino and remains England’s number one stopper.

Following Saturday’s Merseyside derby win over Everton, Liverpool are now in a strong position to finish in the Champions League places as they remain in third.

Klopp’s side are now six points above fifth-placed Man United, although Jose Mourinho’s outfit do have two games in hand following their 0-0 draw against West Brom on Saturday.

Liverpool next face Bournemouth at Anfield on Wednesday night, with the chance to go equal on points with second placed Tottenham if Spurs lose to Swansea in two days’ time.

In other Liverpool news, the Reds are in a top position to finish in the top four according to Graeme Souness.
