Carragher: The writing was on the wall, this Premier League player had to move to Leeds

By Harry Sykes

Jamie Carragher has insisted that Robbie Fowler had no choice but to quit Liverpool and join Leeds in 2001.

The Liverpool legend explained how there was no place in the Liverpool team managed by Gerard Houllier for both Fowler and fellow Anfield academy graduate Michael Owen.

Something had to give and Carragher believes the writing was on the wall for the hugely popular Fowler to leave his boyhood club and make what was a controversial £11million transfer to Elland Road.

The former defender believes the situation is similar now at Manchester City following the stunning breakthrough of Gabriel Jesus and the impact it has had on Sergio Aguero.

“I can see a parallel with Aguero and Jesus for how it was for Robbie Fowler when Michael Owen emerged at Liverpool in the late 1990s,” Carragher told the Mail.”You knew when Michael came through that there would be an impact.

“Once Houllier brought Emile Heskey in and Michael had won the Ballon d’Or in 2001, the writing was on the wall for Robbie and he moved to Leeds. The point is, Michael and Robbie never looked like a partnership; nor do Aguero and Jesus.

“Guardiola, remember, never played with a front two at Barcelona and only did it very rarely during his time at Bayern Munich, so I cannot see him going down that route in Manchester.”

Carragher pointed out that Aguero has been one of the outstanding striker of the Premier League era and his achievements during his six years at the club speak volumes.

Since joining City in 2011 from Atletico Madrid, Aguero has scored a monumental 154 goals from 234 appearances and is widely considered the outstanding player in the Manchester club’s history.

The Argentine, 28, has continued to plunder goals this season, with his 26 matches in all competitions yielding a highly impressive 18 strikes, including 11 from 18 league encounters.
