Casemiro shines, 3/10 flops – Man United player ratings vs Man City

Michael Carrick began his second reign as Man United boss with a huge 2-0 derby win over Man City at Old Trafford on Saturday.

United thought they had taken the lead twice in the first half, but respective strikes by Amad Diallo and Bruno Fernandes were both ruled out for offside.

Carrick’s first game in charge of United since returning was a frantic one, and they were close to going ahead at the start of the second half, but for two fine stops from Gianluigi Donnarumma to deny Amad and Bryan Mbeumo.

Mbeumo was the man to put them 1-0 up just after the hour mark though, as he finished off a quick counter-attack with a low finish into the bottom-right corner and past the City stopper.

The hosts doubled their lead through Patrick Dorgu in the 76th minute, as he got in front of Rico Lewis to turn Matheus Cunha’s cross home from close range.

Mason Mount stepped off the bench to score in added time, but he was also ruled to be offside, and so it ended 2-0.

Casemiro – Man of the match

Casemiro has been criticised by United fans for his performances in recent times, but he was a standout on Saturday as he helped them to a famous win over their rivals.

The Brazil international kept a calm head and cut a composed figure in the middle of a game that barely slowed down throughout, as he won more tackles than anyone else on the pitch, with four.

He could have opened the scoring if not for a strong save by Donnarumma just after the break, but his assured performance meant that the Red Devils had a great springboard to catch City on the counter.

United have been urged to sell Casemiro soon to free up funds for new players, but the Old Trafford faithful saw him off in the 81st minute with a standing ovation against City, so that seems unlikely to happen anytime soon, as he earns an 8/10 rating.

Diogo Dalot struggled to contain Jeremy Doku all afternoon

Carrick named Dalot in his first starting eleven at right-back, but the Portuguese international could have been sent off inside the first 11 minutes of the game.

He lunged in on City winger Doku and was shown a yellow card by referee Anthony Taylor, with VAR subsequently deciding that it was not enough for him to receive his marching orders.

Dalot was let off by VAR as they cleared the call, but his afternoon hardly got much better as he struggled to contain the Belgian from then on.

He completed just 69 per cent of his 26 passes, and rarely got forward to create a chance, but was bailed out by his teammates despite his 3/10 rating.
