‘Catastrophic’ – Exclusive: Danny Mills reacts to major Liverpool player development
Danny Mills has praised Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson after he led talks with fellow players on how the Premier League can help amid the Coronavirus crisis.
The former Leeds United full-back, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, admitted it is a “tricky situation” with the decision of Premier League players likely to impact the lower leagues.
Henderson held talks with captains of other top-flight clubs to discuss the best way to give money during this unprecedented health crisis.
The players’ union, Professional Footballers’ Association, is involved in ongoing talks with the Premier League asking for players to take a 30% wage cut to protect jobs.
Mills suggested the power lies with the Premier League players but stressed the importance they realise that their decision will affect lower league players.
“It is important to realise that a lot of players do a lot for charity and it is not always recognised in the media,” he told Football Insider.
“It is a tricky situation because the PFA will be wanting to protect all of its players.
“Although the Premier League players do not need protection from wage cuts, they have all of the power. The PFA has always been about strength in numbers. Those in the Premier League can write off a month’s money and it would not affect them but if you ask a League Two player to do the same it could be catastrophic.
“There has been some bad press for footballers but they are part of a union. It is about the best deal for everybody all-round.”
A collective fund offering a “seriously significant” amount is expected to be donated to the NHS from each club in the coming weeks.
Liverpool joined Tottenham, Norwich, Newcastle, and Bournemouth in placing staff members in furlough this week.
In other Liverpool news, Paul Robinson has told Football Insider Jurgen Klopp should choose 23-year-old over Ryan Fraser.
