Celtic and Rangers both set for financial blow after confirmed news – pundit
Alan Hutton has suggested both Rangers and Celtic face a financial blow after the Light Blues pulled out of the Sydney Super Cup.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Gers defender and Rangers TV pundit insisted Ibrox chiefs made the right decision withdrawing after the backlash from fans.
Rangers confirmed last week (31 March) that they will not participate in the friendly competition in Australia, stating organisers were “unwilling to fulfill their commitments”.
Football Insider finance guru Dr Dan Plumley told this site the decision would have “significant financial implications” on Celtic.
Meanwhile, the Daily Record (1 April) claim Rangers face a £5million legal bill for a possible breach of contract.
Hutton insisted the Gers’ decision would be a financial blow for both Glasgow giants.
Asked if the news would limit Celtic’s earnings from taking part, Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “Yeah, of course. The big draw was Rangers and Celtic, that’s what it was all about. That’s why the fans would have been turning up in their tens of thousands.
“For that not happen anymore, I’m pretty sure the organisers won’t be too happy with how it’s going on.
“I think ultimately, as a football club, when you decide to do something and you get that backlash, sometimes it’s better to pull out and cut your losses.
“Sometimes I think you have to read the room. Obviously, Rangers put it out there, whether it was leaked or whatever, but they weren’t happy.

“We saw the demonstrations, we spoke about how it doesn’t help the team. The fans made their feelings felt and I think it is the right thing to do.
“It seems that Rangers have decided that they were in the wrong and they’re going to change that.”
