Celtic and Rangers tipped to blow rivals ‘out the water’ after Kenny deal update – McLeish

Alex McLeish has insisted Celtic and Rangers have the power to blow rivals “out the water” in the transfer market this month.

The former Gers boss, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, admitted “it is curtains” for other clubs when either of the Old Firm come calling.

As reported by the Scottish Sun on Monday (3 January), Celtic have beaten Hibs to the signing of Sligo Rovers striker Johnny Kenny.

The Hoops are reportedly set to trigger the 18-year-old’s £125,000 (€150,000) release clause and seal a deal.

The report states Hibs were also willing to pay the six-figure fee and welcomed Kenny as a VIP guest to one of their games in December to try seal the deal.

However, McLeish admitted the pulling power of Celtic and Rangers is too great for other clubs to compete.

“There’s no doubting the power of Rangers and Celtic when it comes to usurping a rival for a player,” McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge.

“That has happened many, many times in the past, as we know. When I was at Hibs, I spoke to Darren Fletcher.

“As soon as we heard Manchester United were in, we knew we were blown out the water.

“When you have the big clubs chasing you then it’s difficult to say (no). You’ve hardly ever heard a youngster go: ‘I’m going to get an apprenticeship first and then go to the Old Firm.’

“When they come in for you, I’m afraid it’s curtains for the other club.”

Kenny has netted 12 times in 34 games since breaking through at Sligo Rovers.

He penned a three-year contract with the Irish outfit back in November.

In other news, pundit claims Celtic fans should “worry” after “heartbreaking” transfer update.
