Celtic backed for Greg Taylor offer amid ‘new player’ claim – expert
Frank McAvennie has suggested Celtic could offer Greg Taylor a contract extension next year.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Hoops striker said that Taylor has “stepped up” this season as a result of competition from Alexandro Bernabei.
The 24-year-old has three years left on his contract at Parkhead after joining from Kilmarnock in 2019.
The Scotland international has played the full 90 minutes in all three of Celtic’s opening Scottish Premiership games.
On 30 June, the Bhoys confirmed the signing of Bernabei, 21, from Lanus on a five-year deal.
As reported by Sky Sports (30 June), the deal for the left-back was said to be worth around £3.75million.
McAvennie suggested that Celtic could offer Taylor a contract extension next year despite signing Bernabei.
“When you’ve got three years left of a new contract and then you’re signing another one, it’s a bit weird,” he told Football Insider.
“I would think they’ll give it another year.
“I’ve always said he was different class going forward and defensively he’s got even better. They’ve got someone new come in at left-back and Taylor has stepped up because now he’s got a challenge. And that’s what you need.
“There’s nothing better than having someone to push you to keep your place, because you get a new player out of it. You’re trying that little bit harder and I thought he was different class at the weekend.“

Taylor made 35 appearances for Celtic across all competitions last season.
In those outings he scored once and provided four assists.
