Celtic backed to complete five ‘statement’ signings – McAvennie

Celtic need at least five players that will “walk into the first team” in order to impose themselves on European competition, according to Frank McAvennie.

Former Celtic striker McAvennie exclusively told Football Insider that he hopes the club are working behind-the-scenes to bring in several ready-made players, claiming that “project” players are no good to the club at this stage.

The Bhoys are yet to unveil any new signings over the summer following the Scottish double triumph of last season but are in the market for a goalkeeper to replace the retired Joe Hart, as Football Insider reported on 17 June that Martin Dubravka was on the club’s radar.

Celtic must sign first-team ready players, says McAvennie

As Celtic’s transfer business is burning slowly as opposed to rivals Rangers – who are on a mission to overhaul their squad – McAvennie believes at least five senior pros must be recruited for Brendan Rodgers’ side to mount a European challenge.

“I’m hoping Brendan’s on holiday, and deals are getting talked about while he’s away,” McAvennie said.

“But I don’t want to see any more ‘projects’ coming in. My personal view is that I want to see people that will come into the first team.

“I want to see five players who can walk into that first team if they’re going to make a statement in Europe.

“I know they’re not going to win any European competition, but at least give it a go and let everyone know the club are back.

“Get results at Parkhead – it was a fortress for years, even when I was there. And it’s too easy to turn them over there now.”

In other news, McAvennie has analysed a potential Premier League move for Celtic star Cameron Carter-Vickers.
