Celtic backed to sign defender after Carl Starfelt latest – expert

Carl Starfelt will struggle to keep his place in the starting XI at Celtic next season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Hoops striker Frank McAvennie suggested the Celts might look to sign another centre-half despite the arrival of Maik Nawrocki.

The Hoops recently confirmed (26 July) the arrival of Nawrocki, who put pen to paper on a five-year deal at Parkhead.

Current first choice centre-back Starfelt has been attracting interest this summer with Russian side Spartak Moscow reportedly ready to test Celtic’s resolve by making an offer for the 28-year-old.

The Sweden international has two years remaining on his contract at Parkhead after joining from Russian side Rubin Kazan in 2021.

McAvenine suggested it will be difficult for the defender if he stays in Glasgow for the upcoming campaign.

I think Starfelt is going to find it hard this season,” he told Football Insider.

Starfelt has not let anybody down but if Nawrocki is as good as he looks he will fit in seamlessly. Starfelt will still want to be the number one and if that happens then everyone will have to fight for their place.

I just felt like he got caught out a lot, especially in Europe. Brendan wants to defend and he wants to do well in Europe.

I think we have got enough going forward, middle to front we have got more than enough to score goals. If we can keep them out and Brendan can sort that defence out then we have a chance to have a run in Europe.
