Celtic defender was never good enough but will go with best wishes from fans as exit confirmed
COMMENT
The departures from Celtic have begun early this summer, with the news that Erik Sviatchenko has returned to his former club FC Midtjylland on a permanent deal.
The Hoops confirmed the news on their official Twitter account, wishing ‘the best of luck’ to the 26-year-old.
The Daily Record have reported that the Hoops received £1million for the transfer.
It is no surprise that the Dane is leaving, as he seemed to have fallen completely out of favour with Brendan Rodgers, who didn’t select him for any league games at all last season.
The reason for that is clear however – he just wasn’t good enough for the Hoops.
He actually did ok in his first two years with the Hoops, nothing spectacular, but he did seem to struggle in the bigger games.
One particularly poor performance was in a 2-1 win over Rangers in December 2016, where former Gers man Barrie McKay gave him a torrid time.
The writing seemed clearly on the wall for the centre-back when the likes of Nir Bitton were preferred for the centre-back role during an injury crisis, and it was no shock that Sviatchenko returned to his former side on loan.
After helping them win the Danish league it was inevitable the deal would be made permanent and he will go with the best wishes of the Hoops fans.
He was always fully committed to the Hoops, even if his performances weren’t exactly the greatest.
