Spanish club renew interest in Celtic ace, club could be ready to do deal – report

By Emma Sanders

Espanyol are preparing to renew their interest in Nir Bitton after being put off by a £10million valuation last summer, according to a report.

The Express claim Espanyol are still keen on bringing the midfielder to La Liga and are prepared to renew their interest if Celtic lower the asking price.

In the summer, the Daily Record reported that the Spanish outfit were linked with a move for Bitton but the move fell through over the club’s valuation of the player.

However, with Ivory Coast midfielder Kouassi Eboue due to arrive, Bitton could find himself even further down the pecking order and The Sun reported that Celtic could be willing to offload him this month.

Bitton has already been linked with a move to Fulham but the Express claims the club want “substantially more” than the reported £2million fee that has been discussed.

It is believed Espanyol’s sporting director Jordi Lardin and coach Quique Flores are huge admirers of the Celtic star and they hope to agree a deal to bring him to Spain.

The 25-year-old has made 24 appearances for the Hoops this season but only 10 of those games have come from the starting XI.

The last time he played a full 90 minute game was a month ago – when he scored during the 2-1 win over Dundee.

Football Insider verdict:

Bitton has clearly fallen down the pecking order under Brendan Rodgers and the club are being linked with a number of midfielders, with Kouassi Eboue set to arrive imminently, which suggests they could be looking to offload. He was close to leaving in the summer and Espanyol could have more luck in January as the valuation is likely to have dropped from £10million. Bitton has been linked to Fulham in a £2million move and with Espanyol being big fans, they could be willing to pay more and meet Celtic’s revised valuation. It’s likely the Hoops will reach a compromise and Bitton will leave.
