Celtic expert elated by ‘incredible’ Rangers development – ‘Best news I’ve heard’

Away Celtic and Rangers fans’ return to Old Firm games is “brilliant”.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Hoops and West Ham striker Frank McAvennie was delighted that travelling supporters will finally be allowed to attend games at Ibrox and Parkhead following a lengthy absence.

The SPFL recently confirmed (29 March) that, following talks between the rivals, both clubs will provide ticket allocations of roughly five per cent for away fans starting next season.

While the new announcement does not impact the remaining Old Firm games this season, which will have no away fans in attendance, it marks a major boost for supporters and the atmosphere of the world-famous showdown.

Ahead of their game on Sunday (7 April), Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers and Rangers’ Philippe Clement welcomed the news, with the former noting that it was “great news” and “something this club have championed for a number of years”.

McAvennie too was pleased by the news and was adamant that having both sets of fans in the stadiums added to the “aura” and “incredible” nature of the heated rivalry.

“It’s brilliant, it’s the best news I’ve heard,” he told Football Insider.

“It really is.

“It’s one of the best games in the world when both sets of supporters are in the ground.

“It’s part of the game and it’s part of the aura of the Old Firm.

“Whether it’s Celtic coming to Ibrox or Rangers coming to Celtic Park, it’s an incredible atmosphere.

“It’s pretty awesome.”
